Bison Month celebrates one of the most iconic of American animal species, one forever linked to the plains, and American western history.
Described as the most ferocious animal in North America, and weighting up to a ton or more, they’re the biggest mammal in North America. But they’re quick and agile: they can run up to 35 miles an hour, and also change direction very quickly.
Tenacious may better describe their survival as a species: hunted down to a few hundred remaining (from an estimated 30 to 60 million at their peak) it’s estimated there are more than 500,000 today!
